28th January 2017

On 27th January 2017, an incident happened in Jaipur in which activists of Karni Sena, a Rajput organisation, purportedly slapped film producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

In reality, what happened was that when activists of Karni Sena went to the sets of the film at Jaigarh Fort Jaipur, with an absolutely peaceful intention of discussing the issue of portrayal of Rani Padmini in the proposed film, one security guard fired three rounds in air. This uncalled for firing infuriated the Rajput boys, leading to a scuffle in which some people on both sides were roughed up.

However, more noteworthy is the fact that in an obnoxious display of crass commercialism, cheap titillation of audiences and naked greed, producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali was planning to depict Rani Padmini in an objectionable way.

It needs to be reminded to every Indian that Rani Padmini is held in the highest esteem by a billion Indians, for the events that transpired in Chittor around the year 1303 AD, during the reign of her husband Rawal Ratan Singh. Alauddin Khalji, who laid a siege upon the fort of Chittorgarh, with his evil eye cast upon the beautiful queen Padmini, was eventually able to sack the fort, as Rajputs ran out of supplies.

However, before these brave Rajput warriors made the supreme sacrifice, 17000 Rajput women committed the act of “Jauhar” or self-immolation. This event is revered by Rajputs of India and is remembered as a golden moment in Human history, around the world.

To think of depicting such a noble woman who has been an inspiration of courage and sacrifice for hundreds of years to men and women of India, in an objectionable way, in a love scene with her tormentor is obnoxious, despicable and deeply insulting to the womanhood of India.

The Rashriya Samata Vichar Manch strongly condems the act of producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali for distorting historical facts with an eye on making a quick buck, This has hurt the sentiments of the Rajput community deeply. The Manch also condemns all those persons from Bollywood who have come out in support of Bhansali.
