The conservation groups of the Indian society often indulge in enforcing a code of morality across the country all round the year, especially on Valentine’s day. These self-proclaimed vigilante groups, who acts as the custodian of ‘culture’, fans out across all the public places on Valentine’s day to find romancing partners and forcefully bring them to their offices to wed them according to Hindu traditions.
In my opinion, culture is something that keeps on evolving with space, time and knowledge. And which culture are we preserving, the one which gave practices like Sati-pratha, dowry, and purdah system? Furthermore, if something so harmless as celebrating togetherness and love can tarnish your cultural belief, I’m so sorry but the youth of the contemporary society is better off the culture so vulnerable and weak which can’t stand celebrating love.
The conservative Hindu groups often call it a ‘cultural import from the west’ while protesting it from their soul. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is one of the groups which protests the celebration of Valentine’s day in Hindu. In 2012, one of the self-styled godman who is currently charged with rape cases proclaimed that this day should be changed to “Worship Your Parents Day”.
Honestly, India is not the only democratic country with such ridiculous protest demonstrations against the idea of celebrating love. Pakistan, Indonesia, and even Bangkok are in the same league.
