Affirmative action is “Positive Action” designed to benefit those persons who are perceived to have suffered from discrimination, those who have been at a disadvantage in terms of various factors – caste, class, religion, gender, etc. In other words, it is a “positive discrimination” to set right the disadvantages that have resulted from prolonged discrimination. It is what is called RESERVATION in India.
These affirmative actions have sought to help level the playing field in terms of bridging inequalities in employment and pay, increasing access to education, promoting diversity, and redressing apparent past wrongs, harms, or hindrances. To execute such actions, through the act of Reservation, India uses the caste based quota system.
You must have heard about seat reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in, say, education. This is exactly how India ensures equality – through caste based quota system.
Favoring a certain caste that has been exploited or wronged in the past by wronging another caste in the present -in India’s case the General castes. The quota system has betrayed so many clans and careers that people born in the general category have started to feel marginalized.
Cases have been reported of people converting their caste from general to SC just so they can get through the quota system leading to their dream University. The idea behind reservation may be positive, but the implementation is highly criticized with people asking to abolish the unfair system. Tell me, how affirmative do you think are these actions?
