Pornography is one of those societal taboos which often gets neglected because it’s a subject from the sexual domain, a domain, which is too controversial to be discussed out in open. The internet statistics, however, brings an altogether different perspective. Estimatedly, among the most popular search terms in 2015 were ‘amateur’, ‘teen’ and even ones that would surely have made Freud smile ‘mom and son’.
Furthermore, the viewing figures are on a scale that golden-age moguls never dreamed of, in 2014, the porn website, Pornhub alone had seventy-eight billion page views and another website, XVideos was ranked the fifty-sixth most popular website in the world. Some of the websites even have viewing figures more than the news websites like CNN.
However, the custodian of ‘rich’ Indian culture, have, in a very dramatic manner, put a ban on 858 pornography websites on moral grounds. The judgment made its way to face nation-wide criticism for being a judgment by a totalitarian and fascist government who wants to snatch every possible right from the individual citing moral principles.
Not only in the society, Pornography has always been the most divisive issue in the theory of Feminism as well. When some feel it be a form of abuse and objectification of the woman body, others embrace some forms of pornography as a medium of feminist expression.
