Without a doubt, it is wrong to disapprove of anyone’s faith in the religion and passing judgments with the intention of hurting someone’s belief. However, before we move on to indulge in further debate, it is extremely important to understand the term ‘religious sentiments’. In my opinion, since every religion preaches good faith and peace, the religious sentiments of the followers can never be so fragile and shallow to get hurt so often.
Lately, there has been a news about a person filing a PIL in Gujarat High court against the android game, Pokemon Go. The PIL claimed that the game was hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus and Jains. Among the other things, the image of eggs shown in the augmented reality game appears in places of worship of different religious groups which according to the petitioner was blasphemous.
Freedom of speech and expression and most importantly, the freedom of choice is an essential pillar of any progressive society. The regressive and conservative forces of the society must understand that with restrictions in the name of religion, we can never have a society we are dreaming of. If a harmless girl entering a temple of a ‘bleeding’ goddess during her periods can hurt the religious sentiments, then the fragile sentiments are problematic and not the religion which celebrates and even worship a ‘bleeding’ Goddess.
